  • Invest in a Long-Lasting Knife Set

Posted on March 5th, 2010 KPAdmin No comments

With a history covering almost two centuries, Wusthof continues to provide the world with finely crafted kitchen knives and shears, pocket knives, and other accessories. Headquartered in Solingen, Germany, Wusthof continues to be under the control of the original family and now employs more than 350 workers, each of whom, we could surmise are invested in keeping any Wusthof knife set as sharp as its standing.

    Product Lines

The Wusthof knives are crafted using two methods – forging for their more expensive line and stamping for the low-end line. So, depending on your budget, you could become the happy owner of some renowned Wusthof knives but possibly having assorted levels of sharpness.

The forged knives are available in the Classic, Ikon, Classic Ikon, Le Cordon Bleu, Culinar, Grand Prix, and Grand Prix II lines while the stamped knives are available in the Gourmet, Emeril, and Silverpoint lines. There is a obvious difference between forged and stamped cutlery in every Wusthof knife set, with experienced cooks choosing forged knives nearly every time when choosing their chef’s knives. Stamped knives are often only preferred for steak and paring knives.

Whatever Wusthof knives set you purchase, though, every one of their knives are made of 15 percent chromium, 0.5 percent carbon, and a small amount of molybdenum. When these distinctive blades are stamped with the Wusthof logo – a trident in a circle against a red background – the knives are easily distinguished from thier competitors’ blades.

    Advantages

While we’re trying to avoid sounding like an advertisment for Wusthof, those knives were judged year after year to be among the highest quality knives available. Proof of this statement is Wusthof knives are the favorite kitchen knife of celebrated chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and James Martin, while also being annually rated to be the top-rated knives by Consumer Reports and Cook’s Illustrated.

For non-professionals, the non-slip traditional handle corresponds nicely to many hand sizes and therefore enables many family members to feel confident working with the knives in your set. Of course, these knife blades are quite sharp and just about never rust, stain or dull. More than the user-friendly aspects, high-quality manufacturing processes and materials are the defining traits of a quality knife.

    Disadvantages

The main issue that could discourage the non-professional from purchasing a Wusthof knife set will be the expensive price. Given that the most affordable set of low-end Gourmet paring knives is priced at $35, you can locate other knife brands selling more knives while charging similar prices. For the many Wusthof sets, $300 is peanuts.

Also, you may find products that have thinner-than-normal handles such as the Wusthof Classic. Of course, men are more concerned with this issue on account of their more substantial hands. Additionally, certain cooks do not care for a stainless steel handle, preferring instead the polypropylene type.

Overall, Wusthof knife sets will give more product for your money. It performs very nicely and efficiently as all high-quality knives should, does the job for many years as this manufacturer has done, and looks very professional when placed on your countertop. With value such as this, you probably will wish to buy another set as a gift for your favorite hostess.

  • Invest in Quality Knives for Better Food Preparation

Now over 100 years old, Farberware manufactures and sells many kitchen gadgets and accessories covering the spectrum from electric appliances to tableware to food storage containers. One of Faberware’s successful product lines is knife sets, which are available in five series. Based on information from Faberware’s website, these five are the Farberware Millennium, the Stainless Soft Grip, the Farberware Classic Series, the Farberware Professional and the Farberware kitchen knife sets, all of which feature non-slip handles.

    Product Features

The Millennium series is made with stainless steel handles attached to fine-edged blades which are advertized as dishwasher-safe, making them more user-friendly than many good quality kitchen blades. The Stainless Soft Grip series includes the same features present in the Millennium series aside from the fact that hand washing is recommended. The Professional Series includes the same features as the first two series as well as the fact that these handles are given three rivets to add stability and strength.

The Classic Series and the Ultraedge Pro Series of the Farberware kitchen knife set apparently call for no blade sharpening because of their high-carbon stainless steel blades, which have become apparently the standard compositions for cutlery recently. With their non-slip handles constructed from polypropylene, and Faberware makes a great product. All you want to remember, apparently, is which Faberware knife set requires hand washing rather than dishwasher cleaning.

    Advantages

Well, if you happen to be the sort who doesn’t clean knives right when you use them, but prefer to place the knives into a dishwasher, the Farberware Millenium knives are just the thing for you. Still, you must realize that even the purest quality steel will rust after many washings with the soaps which are found in your dishwasher.

Furthermore, several of the Farberware knives are made of high-carbon stainless steel, that is proven to be highly-resistant to corrosion and rust. While it is not as straightforward to sharpen as usual stainless steel knives, the alleged “no need for sharpening” quality means you shouldn’t have to worry about it.

The Cuisinart blades are always forged, not molded, which gives you properly balanced blades that are light in your hands but heavy on the cutting jobs. Then again, these features are expected of many forged knives, so that’s hardly anything to have a party about.

Additionally, if you are a person who would prefer to enjoy identical utensils but mislays them often, you may be happy to find out that the components of any Faberware knife set may be bought from any cookware store across the country. Don’t forget, Farberware is almost everywhere!

    Disadvantages

The fairly narrow handles of most knives in a Faberware knife set might pose some difficulty for people with large hands. Although the blades work with relative success most of the time, keeping a proper grip on the handles could be a problem, most often when your hands are wet.

On the negative side of the “no need for sharpening” feature, this may apply only to repeated uses, because you still need to sharpen Faberware knives right out of the package. When you’ve sharpened them, you can simply do the maintenance to maintain the knives as properly as possible. (Basically, the “no need for sharpening” assertion is merely a marketing tool)

The final verdict on a Faberware kitchen knife set: It’s an average product that may be purchased at an average price. If you perform more professional kitchen jobs, you may as well part with more money to buy professional quality knives. For everyday jobs in your home, a Farberware cutlery set will perform just fine.

  • Help Your Dining Table Make a Great Impression

Setting a stylish and attractive dinner table is one sure way to make your guests feel special. The trick to an attractive dining table is simplicity.

Choose dinnerware that is durable and dishwasher proof. My personal preference is for all white crockery and stainless steel cutlery in a contemporary design. But whatever you do try to choose crockery that is chip and scratch resistant so that it lasts.

Another thing to consider, when buying a dinner service or cutlery set, is can you buy replacement items. Its inevitable that some plates or bowls will eventually get dropped, cracked, broken or chipped. It’s much better to be able to replace any damaged items without having to go to the expense of replacing the whole dinner service.

This is equally important for cutlery. My partner often treats the cutlery drawer as a tool box and will sometimes reach for a table knife rather than track down a screw driver. I’ve had to replace quite a few knives, forks and spoons that he has damaged in this way. Its always good if you can buy replacement individual items.

But there is much more to setting an attractive table than the plates, bowls, knives and forks. Glassware is also important and again I recommend simple, but stylish. Like your crockery, choose glassware that is dishwasher safe and make certain you have a good stock of glasses. I suggest that you make sure you have enough wine glasses and general purpose tumblers and maybe a few shot glasses or beer tankards if you like. And if you like a little bit of champagne then you will probably want to make sure you have a set of nice champagne flutes.

Crisp linen or cotton napkins are always preferable to those throwaway paper ones. A few tasteful placemats will work for day to day use but for a dinner party you will probably want a nice table cloth and some tasteful napkins.

Set this off with a tasteful centrepiece and all you need to provide is the food and wine. But that is another story.
