Posted on February 4th, 2010 No commentsI was a bit different as a kid. I mean compared to other kids. I didn’t sneak sweets. I actually ate only meat, fruit and even some vegetables. I know that might sound a bit strange to most parents. My preferences might have been tied to the fact that my mother fed me baby foods until I was twenty-eight. In retrospect, I realize that none of the [major babyinfant] food companies pour a pureed serving of a fudge brownie into a small glass jar.
I also ate very little candy. On Halloween, I would come home from trick or treat, and my mother and I would sit on the floor sorting my take for the evening. We would sort my collection into three piles. I didn’t really get to assign anything to a particular pile; I was mostly an observer in the annual ritual. In one pile would go the things Mrs. Robertson made. Those went straight into the garbage, because Mom was sure that Mrs. Robertson let her fourteen cats walk all over the kitchen counters. The second pile contained a couple of apples and a small box of raisins. Those were deemed suitable for me. I was never too sure what happened to the third pile, the one that had candy of every sort imaginable and popcorn balls. As soon as the sorting was finished, my mom hastily took those into my parent’s bedroom. They never again appeared. The only time I ever was allowed to have candy was when I visited one pair of grandparents. (My other grandparents just read me Bible verses all day, and convince me that God was not particularly enthusiastic about any behavior of a typical child.)
In defense of my mother, I believe that this sort of behavior is taught in the top secret motherhood school. I noticed that when my son was growing up, his mother hid all his candy after Halloween, too. However my wife has never revealed the exact curriculum of this top secret school.
When I became a full fledged adult at the magical age of twenty-nine, I began to learn that applesauce, vegetables and meat in their natrual form do not really have the same texture. I also discovered the wonders of dessert in the wonderful form of a gourmet cheesecake. Actually, I now know that the word gourmet is rarely applied to anything that comes from the discount grocery store in an ugly box with a small cellophane peep hold. The cheesecake turned out to be mostly chemicals–delicious chemicals. But to my mouth that was primarily accustomed to pale brown meat in almost liquid form and thoroughly mashed green beans, it was heavenly.
Some years later, as I went through my gastronomical adolescence, my recreational use of foods helped me to realize that cheesecake didn’t really taste like cardboard, as my first experience had led me to believe. I also discovered that cheesecake can come in a variety of flavors besides blueberry.
Dessert is now my favorite time of day. My favorite way to complete a nutritious mean of two jars of beef, two jars of mashed peas and a pureed apple with cinnamon is with a turtle cheesecake. Don’t allow this news to leak to my mother, though; she’ll just take it to her bedroom.
The saddest part of this story is that I don’t even know how to make a cheesecake. Please tell me if you have a good recipe. Make sure that your recipe doesn’t require using either an oven or a whisk. I can operate a blender, though, since I took notes while my mother prepared the Christmas ham one year.
Author’s aside: It’s possible I may have exaggerated just a bit here and there, but don’t mention it to my mom. She doesn’t have a computer and thinks the Internet is a type of support stocking. I don’t have to worry about her actually reading this.

Of course, you’re happy to see them and are really glad they came, but, being the “good hostess”, you wonder what kind of food to serve them while they’re visiting. You mentally click through the available choices. You haven’t been to the super market in days and the kitchen cupboards are nearly bare. Cheese? How embarrassing to slice the white moldy material away. Chips? Oops…the bag was left open and they are stale. Fruit? Not unless the guests enjoy the brown-spotted overripe bananas. On impulse, I quickly scan the freezer contents. YES…I can’t believe my luck…Cheesecake!
