Your Dental Health and Needs
Posted on March 9th, 2010 No commentsThis fictional character expresses the point of view of a patient with special dental needs:
I am an ortho patient – that is what my dentist tells me. He suggests that I visit the hygienist regularly for my oral prophylaxis. I have been too religious in doing so but I feel that it is so expensive for me to maintain regularly seeing the hygienist. I feel that it sometimes becomes impractical. Of course I know, I need extra care now that I am wearing fixed appliance in my mouth. I can observe how my gums look inflamed after three months of not seeing my hygienist. It made me realize that I still need to do home care to keep my gums healthy and my breath fresh all the time.
Sometimes I hate how my breath smells, it feels so dry and I have many sores. I feel that it is beginning to be a burden to me and of course my orthodontist and hygienist. I asked the patients, I am familiar with, at the dental office of my orthodontist which happens to be their orthodontist also.
They suggested the use of oral irrigator since it would not be easy to use floss all the time. It might just cause me to skip flossing and do nothing but brushing which we all know is not sufficient to clean the teeth at this time.
They even suggested a mouthwash that is all-natural and chemical-free. It is not harsh to the gums – it freshens as it cleans and prevents cavities. Whoa! What a relief?! I have wanted something like this all my life. I use floss but I could not stand it that I needed to do it on a daily basis. It is time consuming and it makes my gums really sensitive. It has been causing my gums to bleed endlessly.
Here are three tools that might be helpful for someone’s home care in a situation like this.
1. The hydrofloss oral irrigator. This powerful device can help to reduce the buildup of plaque and bacteria.
2. ;Therabreath mouthrinse to help keep the mouth pH regulated and that might help fight the germs that can cause bad breath and gum disease
3. Essential oils, like those in oramd – however, this alone is not enough. You should focus on the mechanical break up of plaque on a daily basis.

Discover How To Catch Dungeness Crab
Posted on March 8th, 2010 No comments1 Catching Dungeness Crab on the Oregon Coast is a year round sport in the estuaries, coastal rivers and tidal bays. In the ocean, crab season is closed from August 15th through November 30th. The best weather to go in is mild to sunny weather. Sustained rains bring fresh water. They are salt-water creatures and heavy rains force them out to sea because of the sudden lack of salt water.
2 To stay on the right side of the law, you need to get yourself a license if you are 14 and over. The licenses are not that expensive (call the local chamber of commerce for prices) and they are available for three day or year long. This is for both in-state and out-of-state residents.
3 Legally, you really can only keep the males. The females you must let go. You can determine a male from a female by checking their underside. Males have thin tail like piece, while the females have a round, wide piece. It is pretty easy to tell them apart once you see them both. The measurement of the crab will also determine a keeper. As long as the male crab measures five and three forth inches across the back of the shell, not including the points, consider him ready for dinner!
4 Now, the adventure begins! Crabs are usually caught by using crab rings or crab pots. You can have up to three of these devices per person. Lower the baited (use chicken, fish, turkey, etc) rings or pots into the water, wait about 5 – 7 minutes, pull them up and see what you have. If you come up empty handed, move them to a different spot and try again. The ideal spots are ones with very little current. You can leave the crab pots in the water for a bit longer than the rings. The local bait shops in town will be able to hook you up with the gear you need. Once caught, they need to be cooked as soon as possible, preferably within the hour. The catch limit is 12 per day.

Helpful Information On Sushi Types
Posted on March 8th, 2010 No commentsSushi is one of the most popular Japanese food all around the world. Sushi has evolved from traditional sushi and has taken on some western flavors and presentation formats, and has taken up the name of American Sushi.
The Japanese sushi and the American sushi are quite different from each other. Most Japanese sushi comprise of fish, either raw or treated. The American sushi has options ranging from prawn tempura to vegetarian sushi. Even the presentation format, shape and size are considerably different apart from the ingredients.
In the old times, the rice were fermented along with fish, or treated fish with pickle. Only the fish was eaten and the rice was discarded as it had a strong flavor to it due to fermentation. This sushi is served only near Lake Biwa these days.
Japanese people invented modern sushi as finger food, so they could eat it without the use of chopsticks. People would bring sushi at theater and at festivals to eat it with hands, thus the era of modern sushi came into existence.
Sushi was designed by Japanese so that chopsticks were not needed to eat it. But many traditional Japanese people still love to use chopsticks and eat sushi with it too. Although the Temaki is a kind of sushi which can only be eaten by hands, and not with chopsticks, as it is an ice cream cone shaped roll with different fillings.
There are many other types of sushi popular in America such as sashimi, nigiri, oshi, sukeroku, inari and maki sushi. Americans love and enjoy these types at sushi restaurants. Sukeroku is a really common American sushi, which is vegetarian and is cheap to buy. It is easily available in grocery stores, and has been Americanized as it is vegetarian. This sushi is also known as the ume sushi, as it is a low quality sushi, but still it is very popular in America.
Another difference is of quality. The traditional Japanese reverence for good quality food in small portions has dissipated in America, with sushi bars deferring to the American-sized appetite and attraction to colorful food in big portions.
A sushi chef has to spend years of training in order to open up his restaurant in Japan, and only to serve high quality matsu sushi. In order to experience the taste of an original matsu sushi, one should visit an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, as it will not be available in an American sushi restaurant.

Celebrity Winemakers
Posted on March 7th, 2010 No commentsThe growing prevalence of celebrities (alive and dead) associated with wine seems to be a trend that’s almost irresistible. True, we haven’t yet had a Michael Jackson cabernet, but the vineyards are crawling with vintages from dead celebrities including Elvis Presley (Elvis Blue Suede Chardonnay 2001, Jailhouse Red Merlot 2002, and Blue Christmas Cabernet 2002) and Jerry Garcia (Garcia Cabernet Sauvignon 2001) to name but two. Many other breathing celebs such as Sting, Olivia Newton John, Bob Dylan and former Bond girl Carole Bouquet (excellent name for a winemaker!) have recently started hawking their own wines or associated themselves with commercial vintages.
But before you consider breaking these publicity seekers on wine racks it’s best to realise that some seem to be doing it for the right reason: they are interested in making good wines.French actor Gerard Depardieu produces an excellent Lys de Volan Condrieu 2003 with the acclaimed Northern Rhone winemaker Alain Paret. Many believe that the doyen of serious celebrity winemakers has to be Francis Ford Coppola.A wine buff from his childhood days on Long Island, Coppola got into the wine business in 1975,using the profits from the first Godfather movie to purchase most of Napa Valley’s Inglenook estate. He has been one of the seminal figures in the valley’s rise to international acclaim and Niebaum-Coppola wines still command a dedicated following and make excellent wine gifts.
Other equally serious and perhaps unexpected wine making glitterati include golf players Ernie Els and Greg Norman who own vineyards in South Africa and Australia, respectively. The Greg Norman Limestone Coast Shiraz 2002 is nicely restrained on the palate (unusual in an Australian syrah).Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum lies Australian cricketer Shane Warne. More used to a bottle opener than a corkscrew from his hard partying days, Warne’s foray into more genteel booze was greeted with a certain scepticism that he did nothing to dampen. He confessed it took him a while to understand what chardonnay was, what red wine is and what made the difference between a red and a white wine!

Me And My Portable Gas Grill
Posted on March 7th, 2010 No commentsEveryone knows how great it is dining outdoors in lovely warm weather. There is something quite charming about preparing your meal and eating it outside. It might come from way back in our evolution when our forebears mostly ate outside. I am a passionate user of gas grills, and the pleasure I get out of my weber portable grill never ends.
Not only can I use it in my own home for my family and friends but it comes out with me whenever the occasion arises. Our grill can be seen in our family photo albums.
If you already have, or intend to get a portable gas grill, then do not just use it at home. You are missing out. I get so much more out of mine. Get the right one and your all set to haul it around with you, it will be light enough, and strong enough to take all that pushing and shoving it gets when thrown around a bit and sometimes even sat on. So here are some ideas for you
Take it with you when you go to friends. Even if they have their own grill, you will find that when they are having a gathering, there is always a need for another. Works really well if you have strict vegetarians who do not like their vegetables grilled near meat.
Bring it to the outdoor swimming baths, most now have a picnic area where you can set it up.
I can think of no better place to start a barbecue than at the beach.
Take it to the playing fields, many parks have a cooking and eating spot, it’s great if you don’t have a garden, or your garden is too small for a larger group.
Just throw it in the trunk of your car on a family excursion, pull over when you find a great spot, and start grilling.
Not only does it save on the cost of meals when you are out and about, but you get far more fun and at least you know what you are eating and where it has been cooked.
